Temperament & Personality

Highly intelligent, sensitive, and can be quite gentle, but they are not a cuddly species. They require a very experienced owner who understands their complex body language.

Vocalization & Talking Ability

Can learn a few words, but are not known for talking. Their vocal repertoire consists of a variety of whistles and calls.

Dietary Needs

A very specialized diet is required, high in fat. In the wild, they eat hard-to-crack nuts and seeds. In captivity, a mix of pellets, palm nuts, Brazil nuts, and other hard nuts is needed.

Health & Lifespan

Can live 80-90 years. Their beak is incredibly powerful and requires a constant supply of hard wood and nuts to keep it in condition. They are rare and very expensive.

Housing Requirements

Not a typical pet. They require a custom-built, walk-in aviary made of strong metal. Not suitable for a cage or a typical home environment.
