Temperament & Personality

Known to be shy, gentle, and quiet compared to other macaws. They can be very affectionate but are also sensitive and can be easily stressed.

Vocalization & Talking Ability

Not known for talking ability. Their vocalizations are generally soft and chattering.

Dietary Needs

Highly specialized diet. In the wild, they feed almost exclusively on the fruit of Moriche palm trees. Captive diets must be carefully managed to be low in fat and high in beta-carotene.

Health & Lifespan

Can live 30-40 years. Considered delicate and difficult to maintain in captivity due to their specialized diet. Prone to digestive issues and vitamin deficiencies.

Housing Requirements

A medium-sized cage is adequate, at least 24"W x 24"D x 36"H. Their quieter nature makes them better suited for home environments than other macaws.
