Temperament & Personality

Famously known as 'gentle giants.' They are exceptionally gentle, sweet-natured, and even-tempered. They are highly intelligent and playful but not as prone to nippiness as other macaws.

Vocalization & Talking Ability

Can learn to talk, but they are not known for extensive vocabularies or clarity. Their vocalizations are more often loud, throaty squawks.

Dietary Needs

A highly specialized diet is required. They need a diet very high in fat and calories, consisting of macadamia nuts, Brazil nuts, walnuts, and specialized pellets.

Health & Lifespan

Can live up to 60 years. Susceptible to PDD. Their massive beaks require a constant supply of extremely hard, durable toys and nuts to maintain their condition.

Housing Requirements

Requires a custom-built, exceptionally large, and strong enclosure, ideally a walk-in aviary. A standard cage will not suffice. Absolutely unsuitable for apartments.
