Temperament & Personality

Gentle, intelligent, and social. They are often described as being calmer than the Scarlet or Military Macaw, but still require significant attention and interaction.

Vocalization & Talking Ability

Fair talkers, but are not known for extensive vocabularies. They are more likely to learn loud, natural calls and sounds.

Dietary Needs

Requires a diet with a good balance of pellets, fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts. They have a particular fondness for certain types of seeds and nuts.

Health & Lifespan

Can live for 60-70 years. Endangered in the wild. Susceptible to PDD and Pacheco's disease. Their large, powerful beak requires an abundance of tough, safe chew toys.

Housing Requirements

Requires an exceptionally large and robust cage or aviary. A minimum of 48"W x 36"D x 72"H is necessary. Unsuitable for apartments.
